Journey Craft with Lina and Lizzie 9th, 10th and 11th October 2020

• Canvas cooking tool roll with cooking tools, spoon, spatula, spreader, knife.
• Canoe Paddle.
• Wanagan - a traditional box to keep your cooking kit in whilst canoe journeying.

                       

Make your own canoe journeying items using traditional tools in a beautiful woodland setting. Lizzie and Lina are canoe coaches who understand the elements that make a great traditional canoe journeying kit, or paddle. They are also experienced green wood workers who will teach you how to use axe, knife and mocotaugan (crooked knife) to make your items in the traditional way.

                       

Some of these items take longer than others! You might want to start some projects to finish later, or focus on one or two items. Everyone will have the opportunity to start a range of items.

                       

The course is kindly hosted by Bodfari Woodland Skills Centre, but run independently by Lizzie Harrington and Lina Patel. Please do not contact the Bodfari Woodland Skills Centre about this course. Itinerary

                       

Friday afternoon arrive from 4pm onwards and set up camp. You can choose whether to camp in the woods near our expedition style base camp (composting toilets), or, a short walk away at the camping area next to the Woodland Skills Centre (flushing toilets and showers).

                       

There will be a light supper on the Friday evening, introduction to the course and a chance to get to know the other participants.

                       

Saturday will start with Breakfast. We will then cover the following - History and context of the skills we will use and the items we will make. Introduction to the Mocotaugan (crooked knife), axe and knife.
Safe handling of edged tools

                       

Sharpening edged tools
Lunch
Start to create a range of craft items such as a journeying tool roll filled with cam cooking items, shrink pots, a paddle or wannagan.
Dinner

Sunday

                       

After breakfast, continue crafting. Lunch in the woods.
Finish crafting session at 4pm Pack up camp and depart.

                       

Meals

                       

This course is fully catered and all meals will be provided whilst camping in the woods, from a light supper on the first night to lunch on the final day. (1 x Supper, 1 x Evening meal, 2 x Cold Lunch and 2 x Breakfast).

                       

Pescatarians / Vegetarians are well catered for, but can Vegans and those with serious food intolerances (like celiac’s disease) please contact us to discuss your requirements, as you may be asked to bring some specialist food to supplement your diet.

                       

Throughout the weekend there will be a ‘brew box’ containing teas, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits, and kettle over the fire.

                       

Alcohol:

                       

Strictly no alcohol to be consumed whilst using edged tools. Participants might like to bring a few beers or a bottle of wine to enjoy with their dinner, or during the evening.

                       

Toilets, showers and water:

                       

Mains water is available at the centre and mains water is provided in clean jerry cans and is always available.

                       

There is a composting toilet at the base camp (teaching and camp fire area) and flush toilets and shower at the Woodland Skills Centre, which is a short walk from our base camp.

Most networks are able to pick up 4G at the site.

                       

Duration:

                       

2 day workshop (arrive 19.30 on Friday and depart 16.00 on Sunday).

                       

Minimum Age:

                       

16, but must be accompanied by an adult.

                       

Personal Insurance:

                                                       

       

                                                                        

Whilst not essential, it is recommended that you have insurance to cover yourself and your possessions whilst on this course.

                       

Clothing:

                       

Outdoor clothing is essential for all of our courses. We recommend bringing old clothes for craft work.

                       

A hat
A waterproof and windproof Jacket
Wool jumper or fleece top
Several T-shirts.
Cargo/combat trousers are ideal; as they are strong, light and fast drying. Sturdy hiking boots are a must, as some of the terrain is steep and rocky. Work/gardening gloves.

                       

Equipment:

                       

Small day-sack
Sleeping bag, preferably 3 season
Self-inflating or closed-cell foam sleeping mat
Tent, Hammock or tarp & bivvy-bag
Torch and spare batteries
Small first aid kit, including plasters, blister kit, tweezers, foot powder and any personal medication
Wash kit and towel, preferably containing biodegradable soap Knife, fork and spoon Mug, bowl & plate
Water bottle
Snacks
Notebook and pencils

                       

Tools:

                       

You do not need to bring your own knives or any other cutting tools. However, if you would like to use your own tools, you are welcome to do so once they have been checked by an instructor.

                       

You will have the use of suitable tools throughout the course.

£50 deposit and completed/returned booking form (last page of this document) secures your place on the course.
