By Arrangement - Spoons, Spurtles, Spreaders and Spatulas - Swaledale wild camping retreat

A wild camping retreat in an historic Viking field wood high on the fellside above the river Swale.  Two days of tuition in green wood working, awesome food with the best views of the dale.

We will meet you on Friday evening in the village centre where you will be able to park for the weekend. After a short hike in to our amazing Viking field wood camp site you have time to organise your tent or hammock before dinner round the camp fire. Saturday will start with a cooked breakfast before we set out to source materials and begin our projects. We will then enjoy a full day of green wood working with coaches on hand to help you hone your skills. After dinner you can independently carry on your projects and relax around the camp fire, or simply enjoy the tranquility of the woodland and the beauty of Swaledale. On the Sunday we will be looking to complete the projects. The course finishes at 4pm when we will begin the hike back to the meeting place.

All meals and hot drinks are included.  There will always be brews and snacks available.  Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

Use of our tools is included, although you are welcome to bring your own and use them (after staff have checked that they are suitable).
You can borrow a tent, sleeping bag and roll mat if you haven’t got your own.

Equity and inclusivity is at the heart of our philosophy as outdoor practitioners. Our base camp is remote situated in ancient woodland high above the river Swale. A level of fitness is required for the hike to the site (approx. 2k) and a level of fitness is required to be able to move safely around the wild, natural woodland. However, we would be more than happy to adapt and accommodate to suit your needs as best we can. Please get in touch to discuss how we can make things work for you.

The course will focus on:

The design and creation of your own wooden utensils.
Selecting and processing wood to use in your projects.
Tool selection, handling and safety.
Sharpening and maintaining edged tools.
Decoration techniques such as chip carving, colorising and milk paint.
Carving techniques.

You will also have the opportunity to deepen your understanding of:

Camp fire cookery.
Woodland camping skills.
Environmental best practice.
The environment of ancient upland woodland and remnant forest particular to the north of England.

The course is fully insured and organised through Alfresco Adventures. Staff are experienced outdoor professionals, qualified Bushcraft Instructors and Mountain Leaders who hold REC Advanced Outdoor First Aid Certificates and Food Hygiene certificates.
